Peru moved up two positions in the global index of food safety, according to the Global Food Security Index 2017, said El Peruano.

This improvement puts Peru in the 53rd place, out of a total of 113 countries, according to information from The Economist, said the Lima Chamber of Commerce to El Peruano.

Compared to the rest of the region, the Peruvian economy is in the 9th place. Chile has the first place in Latin America, followed by Uruguay, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Argentina.

“The Global Food Security Index evaluates which countries are more and less vulnerable to food insecurity through 28 indicators measured by three dimensions: affordability, availability, and quality and safety, with scores that range from 0 to 100.”, El Peruano explained.

Peru stood out for its food quality (46°), followed by affordability (54°), and availability (57°). Nevertheless, the country’s major weakness is still the low investment in agricultural investigation and development, which is zero for the Inca region according to the Global Food Security Index 2017.

As for the country’s strengths in food security, there is the nutritional standard, the low agricultural import rates, the low volatility in agricultural production, and the advance in the proportion of the population below the poverty line, wrote El Peruano.

This scene reflects not only a low productivity in agriculture but also the lack of professionalism and little capacity to add value to the agricultural products, said César Peñaranda, director of the Lima Chamber of Commerce.
